This three-day project-based immersion course focuses on the essential knowledge and skills fundraisers need to develop effective foundation proposals. Participants will become familiar with the key components of a competitive grant proposal to a foundation and learn best practices for developing a well-organized budget and a targeted list of foundation funding prospects. Participants will be encouraged to approach their proposal from the funder’s perspective and to think critically about what makes a compelling pitch.
To accommodate diversity in learning styles, the three days are grounded in project-based learning and include a variety of individual writing time, small group discussions and activities, peer review, and large group lecture.
Course at-a-glance: Day 1: Participants develop the need statement, and gain peer feedback on their writing, then launch into an overview on using a logic model framework to craft the project description and program evaluation. An introduction and review of the letter of inquiry follows.
Day 2: Participants continue to gain familiarity and practice with components of a full proposal and letter of inquiry and draft and submit a 1-page letter of inquiry for day three’s peer-review exercise. We continue to cover proposal packaging and online applications. In the afternoon, participants consider the mission-money matrix framework to prioritize fundraising in their organization, than learn to develop a project budget in the afternoon.
Day 3: Participants kick off the day learning how to research, approach and cultivate relationships with funders. In the afternoon, participants will engage in a live expert and peer-review of their submitted letter of inquiry. We wrap-up the three days together with closing exercise and evaluation.

David Holmes Cleveland Lead
Dave Holmes is Cleveland Lead at Foundation Center Midwest. He recently returned to the Foundation Center from a position as Senior Consultant at Grants Plus, writing grants and doing research for a variety of large and small nonprofit clients. In his initial nine-year tenure with Foundation Center, Dave served in various roles including Regional Training Specialist, Interim Director of Foundation Center – Cleveland, and Director of Capacity and Leadership Development. Earlier in his career, Dave served as a Program Officer for the Stocker Foundation in Lorain, Ohio, and as the Director of Grants and Prospect Research at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio. He is a former board member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Northeast Ohio Chapter and of Joyful Noise Music School. He holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh, an MA from Villanova University, and an MLIS from Kent State University.
Brian Schultz Community Outreach Manager
Serving as a bridge between the nonprofit and philanthropic community, Brian conducts trainings and special programming to connect people who want to change the world to the resources they need to succeed. Brian developed and manages the popular series, Rising Tide, which highlights critical social issues and opportunities for philanthropy to accelerate social change. He serves as an Ohio LGBTQ Funding Ambassador for Funders for LGBTQ Issues. Brian also works with a collaborative group of family foundations whose mission is to strengthen collaboration and positively impact the community they fund in.
Brian is a Cleveland native with a strong love of the city and commitment to its social sector. Prior to joining Foundation Center he spent a year in direct service as a City Year Corps member. Brian holds a B.A. from Xavier University in international studies and has studied in Austria and France.
